Now that we’ve got your attention, Mended Light. (upbeat intro music) Welcome to ask the therapist. Joining me today are – Oh, Jessica Moneo – And Chase Brewer – Members of our Mended Light therapeutic team here to answer your burning questions. Today’s question. How long does it take to recover from a porn addiction? And by recover, I guess that means to kick the habit, right? And honestly, I don’t know that this is any different than any other compulsive behavior. I don’t know that there’s different timelines for porn versus cigarettes or shopping or 2:00 AM Taco Bell runs. You know who you are. You’re probably eating Taco Bell right now. It’s the Enchirito. So good. So let’s talk about how long it takes to break a pornography habit, but also habits specifically. Opening thoughts? – My initial thought is there is no definitive timeline. – Yeah. – It’s not like, okay, it’s gonna take 48 days. Boom done. – Yeah. – Yeah. It’s kind of like grief. It carries with you. You never really know when this habit is fully kicked. – Yeah. I think it’s dangerous to look at it in terms of timeline, because if you don’t achieve it during the set number of days then you feel like you failed, right. You feel like you’re never gonna kick it. The thing is, it really depends on the person. It depends on why you turn to porn. It depends on the type of porn. It depends on the frequency. Some people may think they have a porn addiction and they watch porn every week. Whereas to others if they’re watching porn once a week they’re like I got this completely managed. Mischief managed if we’re gonna borrow Harry Potter, right. And first of all, let’s talk about people have different values regarding pornography. For some people, it is just a complete no-no all the way to, yeah this is part of my life. This is part of the diet of things I take in. Some people use it to enhance their sexual relationship with their partner. So let’s lead out of the gate. When do you think pornography use could be a problem? (Jonathan laughing) – Well I think its – That was amazing. – Everything you just said. It depends on the person, their value system, what they’re using it for. – Yeah. – There’s so many layers to it. As therapists we don’t ever judge. – Yeah. – It’s hard to just quantify that. – What direction do you want us to take you? Or what direction do you want to take us in? – Me? – No, you as the pornography viewer. You have to define what the addiction is to you to help us be able to help you. – Well, unfortunately this isn’t the live stream so we’re just gonna have to wing it. I would start off by saying any behavior can be problematic if it’s impeding your life, right? For example, ESPN. I may not have a moral opposition to ESPN. Am I neglecting my children because I’m watching Sports Center? Am I late for work? Am I behind on my paperwork? These types of things. I know somebody personally who’s therapy practice is helping CEOs, not watch porn at the office. These are people who, for them there’s no problem with porn. The problem is I’m not working. – Yeah. – This has now just bled into my life. – Interfering with me connecting with my family – Right. – Or meeting work responsibilities. – Right. – And so the very first I would say is if it’s interfering with your life and it’s keeping you from living the life you want to have, then it’s a problem. And that’s a blanket statement for pornography. Because for me personally, I’m not opposed to nudity or portrayals of sexuality. Alicia and I did a video where we talked about going to Europe and we go in the museums and all the art is naked. And Alicia’s mom is like, « Oh my gosh. » I’m just like, it’s art. Not a big deal. For me the issue with pornography is that I promote healthy relationships. And so much of porn is not that. So much of porn is what’s taboo, what’s forbidden. What’s things that in real life would just wreak complete and utter havoc on people’s lives. And for some people they watch it and they say, ‘Well, yeah I watch it there because I wouldn’t want to do it in real life. It’s my escape. » The same reason people play violent video games and they’re not violent in real life. Because I go into Grand Theft Auto and I get out my violent tendencies out there. For other people it’s it feeds a curiosity and feeds a habit and takes them down a road. And I knew for me personally, I didn’t like the way that I was looking at women. I didn’t like the objectification how it was affecting my neurochemistry. And my expectations of sexuality were completely unrealistic. Just like movie fights are nothing like real fights. Pornographic sex was nothing like real sex. And it was just messing me up. And so for me personally, I wanted to walk away. So going back to the timeline thing you brought up, Chase, just like grief it may be with you forever. Or there may be a time where you feel like, « I’m okay now. This isn’t a problem anymore. » For me personally and then I want to hear from you two not necessarily about pornography, but just kicking any sort of habit that you found to be negative. For me personally, it’s still a wrestle. It’s not nearly the wrestle that it was. But if I have really intense, stressful days, I still feel that urge to turn to that because that’s a quick outlet. – Yeah. – How long does it take to recover? For me, it’s probably a lifelong thing. Once I made the decision and the determination I wrestled with it for years. And then I got to a point where I’m like, « No, forget this. I am actually done. » And I’ve heard it said that breaking a bad habit doesn’t take as long as fully deciding to break a bad habit. And so for me, I wanted to stop but I kind of didn’t want to stop. And I had to treat it like this is an abusive relationship. I treated pornography as a toxic girlfriend. We had some great times together and I’m not saying we didn’t, but this isn’t what I want in my life anymore. – Yeah. – And I actually broke up. So whenever I felt the urge to look at pornography it was like I just got a text from her saying, « I miss you baby. » And I’m like, « Oh just ghost her. Just ghost her. » « Just block this number. » And once I actually made the decision it was pretty quick. But then you deal with it through the rest of the years. You think for months and months or even years, « I’m good. » And then something big happens, and then the pull is there. I have a friend who struggled with alcohol and he was clean and he was sober for years. And then a major life stressor happened. And for the first time in years he felt that pull. What were you gonna say? – Well, to add onto that, I too, cannot gauge the timeline of how long it would take for you to no longer view pornography or feel free from pornography. But I can give you pointers that could help you stay away from pornography at longer increments that you, you yourself can take as a personal win. And those pointers are understanding the shame that comes with you viewing pornography. – Most people who want to quit find it shameful. – Right. And being not being able to quit, they shame themselves because they think, « There’s something wrong with me. » « I am something wrong. » – Yeah, it’s a personal weakness. – Personal weakness. And you may find yourself like many others out there, they’re trying to do this on their own. And they may find that they’re not strong enough to do it on their own. – Yeah. – And, and the shame tells them, « You can’t reach out to someone else for help. » And so that’s one of the- – What if people knew? What if they found out? – Exactly, exactly. You will know who your real friends are when they show you empathy in return. – Yeah. – If people are shaming you, that might be an indication that they might not be the type of people that you wanna hang out with in the first place. – Yeah. – Besides that point though, reaching out to people that could give you that support. – There are groups for this sort of thing. – Yeah, groups for this sort of thing. And looking into your resources, right. One that can help you and hold you accountable can create a change of habit. A change of pattern. – Yeah. I think eliminating shame and finding support and recognizing « This is about a behavior I want to change, this isn’t about an identity that is flawed or broken. » And that’s true whether it’s porn or anything else. What are your thoughts on breaking unhealthy habits or things that you don’t want anymore? – Well, kind of ping ponging. I feel like I’m sitting watching a ping pong match or a tennis match – Sorry about that. – But listening to you guy dialogue back and forth, it’s the same with any addiction. That is there’s shame that usually comes with it, fear of family and friends or people kind outside your immediate circle knowing what’s going on. So I think working with that stigma, of course therapy I think is always helpful when you have an addiction that you’re trying to overcome. But then again, replacing it with healthier habits. – Yeah. – And knowing that it’s day by day. Sometimes it’s gonna be hour by hour. It might be minute by minute. I often will tell clients set a timer on your phone. Five minutes. Can you go five minutes? Awesome, you made it five minutes. Can you do five minutes more? Can you kind of push yourself past that urge Where it’s like you said, when life kind of blows up in our face or things go bad there’s this tendency of, « I wanna go back to that. » That pull becomes stronger. « I wanna go back to something that’s gonna soothe, that’s gonna give immediate relief. » It’s can you sit in that discomfort for five minutes? Awesome, you did five minutes. Can you do 10? And then what will happen is usually after about 20 minutes your nervous system just starts to come back to homeostasis. So it’s like, can you kind of just ride it out a little bit? And of course sometimes easier than others? – No, but that’s such great advice. Because in my case, when I felt that pull, there was a point where I was like, « If I can make it 10 minutes, I’m gonna be okay. » Right? And then I’d be like, « I’m going for a walk. » – Yeah. – I racked up a fairly high Subway bill, actually. Because I’d go to subway and get sandwiches. And I’d be like, that was what I was gonna do instead. And then I started saying, exercise is a great release for me on this. And you’re exactly right. Once you make it through past that hump you’re gonna be okay. If you’re watching a home and you’re struggling with pornography or you’re struggling with buying or eating or drinking or whatever it is that is your go to coping that you go to because it feels good and it provides that immediate release and you want to do something different. Don’t fixate on timelines. It’s gonna take as long as it’s gonna take and it’s gonna take your maximum efforts. And you’re gonna have good days, And you’re probably statistically, there’s lots of great stories by people saying, and I quit. I quit cold Turkey. I decided, and I quit cold Turkey. Most likely you’re gonna have slip ups – And that’s okay. – And that’s okay. – It’s normal. It’s natural. – Yeah. – It’s what we expect. – We’re just changing habits. It doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human. So don’t give up. So that’s how long it could take. But how do you actually get free? We’ve talked about some of that here. I go into a deep dive on that and how to get free from porn addiction. It’s an ask a therapist video that is now playing over Chase’s head. – So if you have broken an unhealthy habit or behavior we would love to hear how you did it. 0.06 Pornographic sex was

0.06 So going back to the timeline
thing you brought up, Chase,
0.06 just like grief it may
be with you forever.
0.06 Or there may be a time
where you feel like,
0.06 "I&;m okay now. This

0.06 For me personally and then
I want to hear from you two
0.06 not necessarily about pornography,

0.06 For me personally, it&;s still a wrestle.

0.06 But if I have really
intense, stressful days,
0.06 I still feel that urge to turn to that
0.06 because that&;s a quick outlet.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – How long does it take to recover?
0.06 For me, it&;s probably a lifelong thing.
0.06 Once I made the decision
and the determination
0.06 I wrestled with it for years.
0.06 And then I got to a point where I&;m like,
0.06 "No, forget this. I am actually done."
0.06 And I&;ve heard it said that
0.06 breaking a bad habit doesn&;t take as long
0.06 as fully deciding to break a bad habit.
0.06 And so for me, I wanted to stop
0.06 but I kind of didn&;t want to stop.
0.06 And I had to treat it like this
is an abusive relationship.
0.06 I treated pornography
as a toxic girlfriend.
0.06 We had some great times together
0.06 and I&;m not saying we didn&;t,
0.06 but this isn&;t what I
want in my life anymore.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – And I actually broke up.
0.06 So whenever I felt the
urge to look at pornography
0.06 it was like I just got
a text from her saying,
0.06 "I miss you baby."
0.06 And I&;m like, "Oh just
ghost her. Just ghost her."
0.06 "Just block this number."
0.06 And once I actually made the
decision it was pretty quick.
0.06 But then you deal with it
through the rest of the years.
0.06 You think for months and months
or even years, "I&;m good."
0.06 And then something big happens,
0.06 and then the pull is there.
0.06 I have a friend who struggled with alcohol
0.06 and he was clean and
he was sober for years.
0.06 And then a major life stressor happened.
0.06 And for the first time in
years he felt that pull.
0.06 What were you gonna say?
0.06 – Well, to add onto that,
0.06 I too, cannot gauge the timeline of
0.06 how long it would take for you to
0.06 no longer view pornography or
feel free from pornography.
0.06 But I can give you
pointers that could help
0.06 you stay away from pornography
at longer increments
0.06 that you, you yourself can
take as a personal win.
0.06 And those pointers are
understanding the shame
0.06 that comes with you viewing pornography.
0.06 – Most people who want
to quit find it shameful.
0.06 – Right. And being not being able to quit,
0.06 they shame themselves because they think,
0.06 "There&;s something wrong with me."
0.06 "I am something wrong."
0.06 – Yeah, it&;s a personal weakness.
0.06 – Personal weakness.
0.06 And you may find yourself
like many others out there,
0.06 they&;re trying to do this on their own.
0.06 And they may find that
they&;re not strong enough
0.06 to do it on their own.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – And, and the shame tells them,
0.06 "You can&;t reach out to
someone else for help."
0.06 And so that&;s one of the-
0.06 – What if people knew?
What if they found out?
0.06 – Exactly, exactly.
0.06 You will know who your real friends are
0.06 when they show you empathy in return.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – If people are shaming you,
0.06 that might be an indication
that they might not be
0.06 the type of people that you wanna hang out
0.06 with in the first place.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – Besides that point though,
0.06 reaching out to people that
could give you that support.
0.06 – There are groups for this sort of thing.
0.06 – Yeah, groups for this sort of thing.
0.06 And looking into your resources, right.
0.06 One that can help you
and hold you accountable
0.06 can create a change of habit.
0.06 A change of pattern.
0.06 – Yeah. I think eliminating shame
0.06 and finding support and recognizing
0.06 "This is about a behavior
I want to change,
0.06 this isn&;t about an identity
that is flawed or broken."
0.06 And that&;s true whether
it&;s porn or anything else.
0.06 What are your thoughts on breaking
0.06 unhealthy habits or things
that you don&;t want anymore?
0.06 – Well, kind of ping ponging.
0.06 I feel like I&;m sitting
watching a ping pong match
0.06 or a tennis match
0.06 – Sorry about that.
0.06 – But listening to you guy
dialogue back and forth,
0.06 it&;s the same with any addiction.
0.06 That is there&;s shame that
usually comes with it,
0.06 fear of family and friends
0.06 or people kind outside
your immediate circle
0.06 knowing what&;s going on.
0.06 So I think working with that stigma,
0.06 of course therapy I
think is always helpful
0.06 when you have an addiction
that you&;re trying to overcome.
0.06 But then again, replacing
it with healthier habits.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – And knowing that it&;s day by day.
0.06 Sometimes it&;s gonna be hour by hour.
0.06 It might be minute by minute.
0.06 I often will tell clients
set a timer on your phone.
0.06 Five minutes. Can you go five minutes?
0.06 Awesome, you made it five minutes.
0.06 Can you do five minutes more?
0.06 Can you kind of push
yourself past that urge
0.06 Where it&;s like you said,
0.06 when life kind of blows up
in our face or things go bad
0.06 there&;s this tendency of,
"I wanna go back to that."
0.06 That pull becomes stronger.
0.06 "I wanna go back to something
that&;s gonna soothe,
0.06 that&;s gonna give immediate relief."
0.06 It&;s can you sit in that
discomfort for five minutes?
0.06 Awesome, you did five
minutes. Can you do 10?
0.06 And then what will happen is
usually after about 20 minutes
0.06 your nervous system just starts
to come back to homeostasis.
0.06 So it&;s like, can you kind of
just ride it out a little bit?
0.06 And of course sometimes
easier than others?
0.06 – No, but that&;s such great advice.
0.06 Because in my case, when I felt that pull,
0.06 there was a point where I was like,
0.06 "If I can make it 10
minutes, I&;m gonna be okay."
0.06 Right? And then I&;d be like,
"I&;m going for a walk."
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – I racked up a fairly
high Subway bill, actually.
0.06 Because I&;d go to subway
and get sandwiches.
0.06 And I&;d be like, that was
what I was gonna do instead.
0.06 And then I started saying,
0.06 exercise is a great
release for me on this.
0.06 And you&;re exactly right.
0.06 Once you make it through past that hump
0.06 you&;re gonna be okay.
0.06 If you&;re watching a home
0.06 and you&;re struggling with pornography
0.06 or you&;re struggling with buying or eating
0.06 or drinking or whatever it
is that is your go to coping
0.06 that you go to because it feels good
0.06 and it provides that immediate release
0.06 and you want to do something different.
0.06 Don&;t fixate on timelines.
0.06 It&;s gonna take as long as it&;s gonna take
0.06 and it&;s gonna take your maximum efforts.
0.06 And you&;re gonna have good days,
0.06 And you&;re probably
statistically, there&;s lots
0.06 of great stories by
people saying, and I quit.
0.06 I quit cold Turkey.
0.06 I decided, and I quit cold Turkey.
0.06 Most likely you&;re gonna have slip ups
0.06 – And that&;s okay.
0.06 – And that&;s okay.
0.06 – It&;s normal. It&;s natural.
0.06 – Yeah.
0.06 – It&;s what we expect.
0.06 – We&;re just changing habits.
0.06 It doesn&;t make you
weak, it makes you human.
0.06 So don&;t give up.
0.06 So that&;s how long it could take.
0.06 But how do you actually get free?
0.06 We&;ve talked about some of that here.
0.06 I go into a deep dive on that
0.06 and how to get free from porn addiction.
0.06 It&;s an ask a therapist video
0.06 that is now playing over Chase&;s head.
